These small swivels are ideal for integrating a joint in a leader. For example, a pop-up rig tied with a stiff mono hooklink – like the one used by the well-known English carp angler Terry Hearn. Such a rig is seen by many specialists as the ultimate rig for catching big carp and is usually fished as a single-hook bait (i.e. without any additional bait) or with only a little additional bait.

At Korda we would fish a stiff pop up rig like this with one of our wide gape hooks fitted with a small rig ring. First we tie the short, stiff mono leader (preferably with steam) to the hook. The water vapor causes the mono leader to stretch and not come off the eye of the hook at too extreme an angle. As a result, the hook later stands upright in the water.

These flexi ring swivels have been popular for the rotary rig for quite some time. To do this, tie the large ring of the swivel to the end of the leader and thread a longshank hook through the small eye of the swivel. The hookbait slides between two stoppers on the shank of the longshank hook using a small rig ring. The top stopper sits in the bend of the hook, the bottom stopper sits about halfway up the hook shank. In combination with a pop-up bait, this set-up guarantees that the fish can hardly blow the bait out. Big fish specialists like Dave Lane use the rotary rig very successfully.
