Lakes and wetlands are at great risk in Europe. In order to better protect them, eight environmental protection organizations came together and founded ELLA. Its mission is to protect the endangered habitats that are so important, especially for anglers.
Background EU ELLA
Lakes and wetlands in Europe are at high risk. Climate change, pollution and land use changes require joint action and holistic approaches. As part of the Green Deal, EU member states have committed to restoring damaged ecosystems and improving their ecological status. To achieve this goal, we need strong collaboration between experts, companies and environmentalists.
The European member organizations of the international network Living Lakes, which the GNF founded in 1998, are already working together to restore European waters. However, overarching cooperation to implement technologies and measures in European lake regions is still in its infancy - especially because Europe lacks an institutionalized alliance that jointly, quickly and effectively promotes the protection of wetlands at the political and civil society level.
This is exactly where the EU LIFE project ELLA starts. With the project, the GNF and its European partners are formalizing the European Living Lakes network by founding a registered association (EU ELLA eV). The European Living Lakes Association (ELLA) is aimed at all actors in lake regions, from local and regional authorities to companies, civil society organizations and scientific institutions.
EU ELLA project goals
ELLA eV sees itself as a European umbrella organization for the protection of lakes and wetlands and is actively committed to nature conservation, landscape conservation, mitigation of climate change and coastal and flood protection. In this context, rural development, sustainable agriculture and the protection of biological diversity are also of central importance, so that different political and legal aspects are taken into account.
The partners in this project hold events and campaigns on the topic of climate and biological diversity. Through workshops, seminars and conferences, we bring together experts, scientists, decision-makers and national and regional government representatives to enable intensive dialogue and knowledge transfer.
Background and history
- The Living Lakes Network was founded in 1998 as an informal network of lake organizations. Living Lakes is not a legal entity. The network is supported by the Global Nature Fund (GNF).
- The EU project ELLA (reference number LIFE20 NGO4GD/DE/000028) is a project funded by the EU Commission (LIFE 2020 Call for Proposals from NGOs on the European Green Deal (LIFE 2020 NGO4GD)). The duration of this project is from November 1, 2021 to October 31, 2023. The project includes three different work packages with different tasks. One of the activities is the “foundation of a legally constituted European Living Lakes Association (ELLA) of NGOs”.
- The legal entity “ELLA – European Living Lakes Association” (Organization ID: E10331428) is a newly founded legal entity.
- The ELLA association was founded in a constituent meeting of the general assembly on May 4, 2022.
- ELLA eV was registered/accredited as an association under German (and European, as there is no EU association register regulation) law at the Freiburg District Court (Registergericht, Holzmarkt 7, 2022 Freiburg, Germany) on December 2, 79098.
- ELLA eV formally received non-profit status on December 27, 2022.
