Deeper Sonar - Sonar for anglers

Once developed for military purposes, the echo sounder is also finding its way among petty enthusiasts. Here you can find out how it all works and which target fish it is particularly suitable for.

How does a sonar work?

Almost everyone has heard of an echo sounder or sonar. Well-known are dolphins that recognize their prey with their clicking noises in the murkiest water or naval ships that track down submarines. In both cases the same technique is used, which can also be used by anglers. Deeper has a spherical product that houses all the technology. This sonar device emits pulses of sound waves and listens for the echo.

As soon as an echo pulse is received, another is sent out. Because sound waves travel through water at approximately 1,6 mile per second, sonar can emit multiple pulses per second. Of the Deeper PRO, Deeper PRO+ 2 and Deeper CHIRP+ 2 send out 15 pulses per second. The echo sound pulses are first converted into electrical signals and then displayed, giving anglers the depth and firmness of the bottom and any objects in between.

A sonar scans in cones

Most echosounders can control the range of the sound wave cone by changing the scan beam frequency as needed. This is of such importance as different types of scanning beams will prove more or less effective in different fishing situations.
A wide scan beam angle (typically 40° to 60°) is good for quickly capturing larger areas and providing basic depth and bottom structure information while sacrificing accuracy and detail. A wide scan beam angle is best for shallow waters because the cone covers a wider area as the scan depth increases. This means that if you are scanning at a depth of 13,7 m, your detection range of objects extends to an area with a radius of 14,3 m.
A narrow scanning beam angle (approx. 10° to 20°) provides a more precise image but covers a smaller area. This is better suited to accurately locating fish. In addition, a narrower scanning beam angle offers advantages in deeper waters, since the cone is less wide.

Fish Deeper app

Combined with one of the Deeper sonars, this app turns your smartphone or tablet into a high-quality sonar display. It is available to download for smartphones in the well-known stores. Details at deepersonar.com
In most cases, fish will appear as arcs on your display. The reason for this is very simple. If a fish swims directly through the sonar cone, it will reflect sound pulses off one edge, the center, and the other edge of the cone. The echo signals from the two edges of the cone have covered a slightly greater distance than those from the middle. This creates an arc or "fingernail" shape on your display.

Where is sonar most beneficial?

shore fishing
This is how you increase your fishing success from the bank: Simply cast the Deeper sonar, retrieve it and evaluate the fishing data you need. Whether you're locating fish stocks, exploring water features, or charting the lake to get a comprehensive overview, your sonar is ready.
boat fishing
With powerful transducers and advanced mapping and display options, Deeper sonars are smart, versatile alternatives to traditional marine fishfinders. In addition, the ejection function of the Deeper makes it easy to reach all places.
Carp fishing
Whether you're targeting carp in weedy areas or trying to avoid tree stumps, your sonar will tell you the location and thickness of the weed. Find out the features they love like humps, indentations and edge shelves. You can even locate the carp yourself. Once you've baited an area, you can monitor whether the fish are staying there or swimming elsewhere.
More target fish
Particularly good experiences have been made with perch and pike. The latter can be tracked down just as easily as zander by ice fishing. More on this in the Deeper blog.
