Fishing ban in Amsterdam?

The street fishing trend also has its origins in the cities of Amsterdam and Hamburg. In these places, young anglers travel light through the canals, canals and harbors of the urban area. Between cars, ships, tourists and sights, they take on the challenge of chasing perch, zander and pike. This trend has now spread to large parts of Germany and Austria. But urban fishing is much more than just a practice – it is an attitude. It means using modern fishing methods in urban areas and placing particular emphasis on sustainability. The focus here is on the principle of catch and release. It also requires confronting the realities of the most regulated waters in urban environments.

Party for the animals against street fishing

In Amsterdam, the “Partij voor de Dieren” (Party for the Animals) is now campaigning to ban fishing in the city. That means it's five to twelve for Dutch anglers, as the fishing ban in the capital could soon be a done deal. The Animal Protection Party has introduced a bill that would ultimately ban fishing from the city area. The party had already tried to ban fishing in other Dutch cities at the beginning of the year.

Anglers protest on September 7th

In response, anglers are called upon to take part in a demonstration on September 7th to prevent this ban. Supporters from Germany also have the opportunity to take part in this campaign. This might be the last opportunity to present the arguments for keeping fishing in the city. The Amsterdam Fishing Association and two prominent figures in the Dutch fishing scene, Hans Sibbel and Juul Steyn, will use this event to present their points of view.

On September 7th at 9 a.m. the revised draft law of the “Party for the Animals” will be presented in the Stopera in Willem Kraanzaal. If the local council accepts this draft, fishing in Amsterdam will be a thing of the past for the time being. The fishing association in Amsterdam is calling for large numbers to take part in the demonstration in order to continue making street fishing possible in Amsterdam.
